Dehumanization and stereotypes take root when the reality of the human experience can be ignored. Antisemitism thrives where Jews are small in number or entirely absent.
Ask A Jew is a simple but innovative project that matches curious, open-minded people with Jewish individuals for one-on-one online conversations. Based on the concept of the “Human Library,” Ask A Jew contests the dehumanization that is possible when actual Jews are absent.
Jews make up only 1% of the Canadian population. If you don’t live in Toronto or Montreal, the chance of knowing many Jewish people is statistically remote.
Even if you do know some Jewish people, we will let you in on a secret — they may not be open to having these conversations with you. Unmediated discussions, especially on social media, have caused incalculable pain to Jewish Canadians, especially since October 7, 2023.
Ask A Jew promotes dialogue between participants and Jewish individuals with unique life experiences, fostering empathy and understanding, and dismantling stereotypes and prejudices.
Ask A Jew aims to bridge this communication divide.
Participants will agree to guidelines of respectful conversation and be provided with recommended prompts for discussion. Jewish participants operate on the assumption of goodwill among their interlocutors. No questions that are asked in a spirit of goodwill will be dismissed or rejected. Jewish participants will, however, summarily end any session that devolves into disrespectful or deliberately harmful dialogue.
Upstanders Canada is currently developing this project for launch in mid-2025.
How you can participate in Phase 1:
If you identify as Jewish, let us know if you would like to participate as an “Askable Jew.” (We’ll have an orientation session before we link you with a guest!)
If you are not Jewish,
let us know if you would like to Ask A Jew! We’ll let you know when the project is up and running and we’ll arrange an agreeable time for you and your Askable Jew! (We’ll also provide several “prompts” to help guide the conversation!)
We are developing a parallel project called What Your Jewish Friends Wish You Knew. Learn more here…
